Mammals

Mammals (formally Mammalia) are a class of vertebrate, air-breathing animals whose females are characterized by the possession of mammary glands while both males and females are characterized by sweat glands, hair and/or fur, three middle ear bones used in hearing, and a neocortex region in the brain.

All mammals living in Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR) give birth to live young and are endothermic. It is estimated that over 100 species of mammals are found in NBR. Due to the presense of protected areas, the mammals like Tiger, Leopard, Sloth bear, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Black buck, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, Lion-Tailed macaque, Nilgiri marten, Clawless otter, Ruddy mongoose, Indian civet, Bats, Rats, and Shrews thrive in NBR.
